The Baltic Sea is one of the most intensely trafficked marine areas in the world. There are around 2000 ships at sea in the Baltic at any given time.
The ship traffic analysis is based on the HELCOM Automatic Identification System (AIS) data recorded during 12 months, 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009. During this period average winter conditions prevailed. Thus, the assessment is based on ship traffic in ice conditions during such an average winter.
